Ova sezona je bila nezaboravna za Jima Clarka i Team Lotus. Clark je pobedio na čak sedam trka. To je bila najupečatljivija pobeda u šampionatu, još od Ascarijeve titule iz 1952. godine.

Porsche se 1963. godine povlači iz Formule 1 i okreće se trkama sportskih automobila. Za nešto više od dvadeset godina, nemačka marka će se vratiti u Formulu 1, ali samo kao dobavljač motora. Postave Lotusa, BRM-a i Coopera su ostale nepromenjene. Pošto se Porsche povukao, Gurney prelazi u Brabhamov tim. Obećavajući Bowmakerov Lola tim se povlači iz sporta, a njihove bolide kupuje Reg Parnell, za koga vozi mladi Novozelanđanin, Chris Amon.

Nakon Bowmakerovog povlačenja, Surtees prelazi u Ferrari. On se pridružio Belgijancu, Willy Mairesseu, koji je imao neke obećavajuće performanse ranijih sezona. Otcepljavajući se od Ferrarija, stvoren je novi tim ATS, a oba fabrička Ferrarijeva vozača, Phill Hill i Baghetti, prelaze u novi tim. Kasije će zažaliti zbog toga.

Clark je vodio na prvoj trci sezone u Monaku, sve dok nije morao da odustane, zbog problema sa menjačem. Nakon toga Graham Hill i Ghinter dolaze do prvog i drugog mesta. Clarkova sreća se vratila u Belgiji, gde je došao do nezaboravne pobede u kišnim uslovima na stazi Spa. Iza njega su završili McLaren i Gurney. To je bio prvi podijum za Brabhamovu ekipu.

Ista priča se ponovila u Holandiji na stazi Zandvoort, gde je Clark došao do pobede, a iza njega su završili Gurney i Surtees. Na Reimsu Clarka niko nije mogao da zaustavi. Clark do četvrte pobede u nizu dolazi na Silverstoneu, a na drugom mestu završava Surtees, nakon što je Graham Hill ostao bez goriva u poslednjem krugu.

Surtees je već nekoliko godina u Formuli 1 ali nikako nije uspeo da dođe do pobede. Prva pobeda za Surteesa je došla na VN Nemačke 1963. godine. Ta pobeda je ujedno bila i prva pobeda Ferrarija od Monze 1961. godine. Clark je u Nemačkoj završio na drugom mestu, a na trećem se našao Ginther u BRM-u.

Ferrari je u Monzu došao sa novom šasijom, koja je specijalno dizajnirana za V8 motore koje su uvedeni 1964. godine. Clark je došao do pobede, a iza njega su završili Ginther i McLaren. Clark sa pobedom u Monzi postaje svetski šampion, iako su do kraja sezone ostale još tri trke. VN Amerike se vozila na Watkins Glenu, a pobedu odnosi Graham Hill, dok Clark završava na trećem mestu.

VN Meksika se ove godine po prvi put našla u kalendaru F1, a na njoj Clark beleži šestu pobedu u sezoni. Njegova sedma pobeda dolazi na VN Južne Afrike u decembru.
